Honorable Mention
Blue Notes (2)
Nellie melba (Lorin Ford)

Blue’s summer palette:
a flash of mineral tint in each salt crystal.
Sky, beach, breeze, flicked with scintillas,
shine on forever in the fun-house mirrors
of high-sheen tanning lotion. Sapphires
glint in the sweat of vanilla flavoured skin.

Aqua to ultramarine, blue
boogies the surf in a bright bikini;
laughing yellow’s favourite dancing partner,
darling of the benevolent sun. Blue defines
the curves of blue-eyed slips of girls
with coolest shadow.

With time,
blue takes on tones of mauve and violet;
perspectives further along the spectrum.
Irony. Distance. Late-coming wisdom.
Shades of wistfulness.

Come winter, sky on a fine morning
is crumbling fresco, powder-blue,
still paling. Already,
(how does it happen so soon?)
too many cone-cells in the eyes have died.
Canvas patches bloom on the painted ocean
and waves fade into nothing as they break
on the shores of whitening islands.

What’s to do?
At night, open the curtains.
Choose an ice-blue star for your bedside light.
In the day count forget-me-not petals
as you used to count petals of daisies.
Let memory come;
the long galleries, retrospection.
